ABOUT RPPN PRIVATE RESERVE
WHAT IS A RPPN?
The Private Reserves of the Natural Heritage (RPPN – Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural) are oriented to Nature conservation in private properties. It was elaborated in 1990 to legitimate the nature preservation in rural properties.
The Law 9985 of 2000 which approved the Conservation Unities System (SNUC) reinforced the RPPN, becoming category of Conservation Unity.
In the RPPN, the land owner becomes the owner which depends on the IBAMA´s support and on the Center of Environmental Resources (CRA), of the Forest Development Directory (DDF-BA) and non-governmental organizations (ONG) as IESB, in the planning usage, maintenance and protection of these reservations.
WHICH ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF HAVING A RPPN?
Who creates a RPPN has exemption of ITR for the declared area, it can forward projects with the NGO´s support for the Environmental National Funds to finance the reserve maintenance and has priority in the agricultural credit.
Other advantage if that, of this way, the forest cannot be cleared for social purposes, once it
Fulfills its social function with environmental protection.
There are NGOs which give support (financially) to the owners interested in creating a RPPN (see www.matatlantica.org.br)
WHAT AN AREA MUST HAVE TO BE A RPPN?
The Forest Code of 1965, in its article 6º, allows the owners of natural area declare it as integral protection for posterity. The Federal Decree nº 1922, of 5th of June of 1996, is effect today to rule the RPPN creation.

RPPNs can be created in forest areas, or in natural fields. It can be the whole property or part of it. The RPPN creation is free willing and exclusive of the owners.
WHAT IT CAN BE MADE IN A RPPN?
According to the new law of SNUC, in this type of reserve, if the owner wishes and depending on the are characteristics, it can perform scientific researches, environmental education and ecotourism with IBAMA,s support, companies and Mayors office and ONGs.

These documents must be forwarded to IBAMA, together with the request and the Commitment Term. The certification is made by a Directive of IBAMA´s President having the owner, afterwards, approved it in continuity to the Real Estate margin.
THE IMPORTANCE OF A RPPN IN THE ECOLOGICAL ZONES IMPLEMENTATION
An ecological zone or biodiversity is a mosaic of land usages which connect fragments of a natural forest through landscape. The RPPNs can be considered as the best allied of parks and reserves created by Government, because it helps to protect its surroundings, forming vegetation zones which have the function of sheltering and passage points of wild animals. These zones allow the fauna circulation, impeding that familiar group stays isolated among themselves, which would cause blood problems and would increase the extinction risks.
